Ralph's
Listening Room
Welcome to my Listening Room, where my words
become songs, my memories become melodies,
and my personal stories come to life.
The Music Never Really Left Me.
I just needed the right time to find my creative way back.
For almost a year now, I’ve been turning the echoes
of yesterday into the music of today—and tomorrow.
For those of you who have known me for years, you may remember that music
was once a big part of my life. From the late 1970s through 2002, off and on,
I worked in the music business—writing lyrics, producing, and collaborating
with many talented musicians, engineers, and artists in Philadelphia, New York, and Chicago.
After many years away, I’ve found my way back to one of my greatest passions: songwriting.
At this stage of my life, the words have even more meaning. Years of love, loss, laughter, and
life experiences have given me so many stories to tell. Songwriting allows me to revisit cherished
memories, express emotions, and turn those experiences into something meaningful.
It's also a wonderful way to travel back in time—to revisit the people, places, and moments that shaped my life.
Sometimes, a song can take me back decades, making those memories feel as vivid as if they
happened yesterday. And through my lyrics, I get to bring a little piece of those moments back to life.
It's not just about writing songs anymore. It's about sharing pieces of my life through music.
“Whether good, bad, funny, or sad … every song tells a story, and every story has a song.”
And interestingly enough, this return to songwriting was sparked by a project
I'm currently working on—one that I hope to share with you very soon!
My Listening Room is where I'll be sharing some of my newest work, along with songs whose
lyrics and ideas began many, many years ago and have finally been brought to life.
So put on your headphones, listen in your car, turn up the volume... and enjoy!
Some songs may make you think, some may make you laugh, and a few might even tug at your heart.
And somewhere in many of them, you'll find a little part of me.
Before I go any further, I want to dedicate these songs to a very dear friend
who is no longer with us: composer and arranger Jack Ebbert.
I thought about Jack often throughout this entire process.
Jack taught me so much about songwriting. He understood my ideas, helped me develop
them, and showed me how to turn words and thoughts into something more.
He taught me about song structure, timing, phrasing, and rhythm.
His critiques were always thoughtful and constructive, coming from a genuine
desire to make each song better—and to make me a better songwriter along the way.
But, Jack and I shared a lot of laughs along the way, too.
I especially remember those times when I'd struggle to find just the right word to make a
lyric rhyme. Sometimes I'd come up with something so ridiculous or so obviously forced
that we'd just look at each other and burst out laughing til our sides hurt.
Those were the moments that made songwriting
so much fun. It wasn't always about getting every word perfect.
Sometimes, it was simply about two friends, a little creativity, and a whole lot of laughter.
And even after all these years, those memories still make me smile.
As I've returned to songwriting, I realized just how much his guidance and mentorship have stayed with me.
I found myself drawing on those lessons again and again, whether I was creating something entirely
new or revisiting lyrics and ideas I wrote decades ago but never had the chance to finish.
In so many ways, Jack is still a part of the music I'm creating today.
And I think he would have enjoyed hearing what I've been working on.
These songs are for you, Jack. How’d I do?
